Who is Thomas Frank again?

It seems unlikely that the Great Dane's magnificent contribution to Brentford's recent history will ever be forgotten ands he was always going to be a tough act to follow. But boy is the previously unheralded Keith Andrews making a decent fist of it.

When Brentford lost 3-1 at Fulham a month ago, there were some obvious misgivings about the new head coach with doubts about whether he was the right man to keep this great Bees story on an upward curve. The confidence in him now is surely rising.

Wins now against Man United and Liverpool, a comeback draw against Chelsea and a very narrow defeat to Man City are decent returns from a really challenging set of early season fixtures and they have come through with flying colours.

They showed intensity and desire against the Reds - or greens as they were for the day - that Arne Slot's men could not match. And the champions' defensive vulnerabilities were again exploited.

All it needed was a long throw0in to get the narrative started. Opponents know it's coming, but can they stop it? After Arsenal, the Bees may just be the most dangerous set piece team around and it took them only five minutes to prove it.

Michael Kayode's howitzer of a long throw was nodded on by Kristoffer Ajer at the near post and Dango Ouatarra had room to turn the ball home from not very far out with a firm left foot hook. It was the perfect start for Keith Andrews' men.

That is now eight goals scored from long throws since the start of last season. No one has used that scoring method so successfully.

Florian Wirtz missed a great chance to make it 1-1 as Liverpool fought back - half-volleying wide from inside the box - but the Bees were determined to keep on the front foot as much as possible.

Jordan Henderson, relishing this game against his old club, go forward to zing one just wide. Mikkel Damsgaard's strike from 25 yards was dipping in until the long reach of Giorgi Mamardashvili tipped it over the bar.

With Henderson and Damsgaard looking sharp in midfield and ready to exploit Liverpool on the break there was always a chance of those green away shirts being hit with quick balls played forward and when Damsgaard spotted Kevin Schade in space, a perfectly weighted ball invited the striker to outpace Ibrahima Konate and tuck home smartly.

That should have been the end of a great half for the Bees but deep into added time, Milos Kerkez gave the visitors a lifeline when he potted at the far post when Conor Bradley's low cross evaded a clutch of players at the near post.

Home fans were furious that ref Simon Hooper allowed so much injury time for the goal to be possible.

Would that goal change the course of events? The Bees were determined to see that it would not. First Igor Thiago almost turned in a fine low cross from Schade, then Damsgaard forced Mamardashvili into a flying save with a shot from just outside the D.

The momentum was all with the hosts and very soon it would be 3-1, with Thiago putting home a spot-kick awarded after a VAR intervention.

A free-kick outside the area was initially awarded by Tim Robinson - the replacement ref after Simon Hooper went off injured at half time. But Virgil van Dijk's foul on Ouatarra was judged to be on the line by Stockley Park video watcher Chris Kavanagh and therefore worthy of a penalty.

Arne Slot made a triple substitution but none of those coming off was Mo Salah, who once again struggled to make an impact until the game was nearly up. He reacted well to bury a Dominik Szoboszlai cross, with a right-0foot shot into the roof of the net, setting up a potentially awkward seven minutes of injury time which was extended by snow extra four.

But the Bees, and Andrews, were not to be denied a famous - and deserved - win.
