'If you go here': Arne Slot answers whether Brentford defeat was Liverpool's worst performance of the season

Liverpool continue to get worse in the Premier League after defeat against Brentford on Saturday.

The Reds have looked off the pace all season long, but their campaign hit a new low at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Four Premier League losses in succession is inexcusable for Arne Slot, and the Liverpool head coach could soon be under growing pressure to lose his job.

As with the previous three, Liverpool‘s defeat was by just the one goal, but that flattered the Reds on a dismal night in West London.

Supporters have become used to losing this season, having seen their team go down against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United and Brentford this season.

But the performance against the Bees was arguably the worst of the lot. That was the question posed to Slot at full-time on Saturday night, and his answer illuminated why Liverpool fans should be especially concerned.

Arne Slot thinks Liverpool are getting worse

All three of Liverpool’s previous Premier League defeats hurt even more as they each came with the opposition grabbing a late winning goal.

On Saturday, Slot’s team could not even stay in the game that long. Barely an hour had gone by the time Igor Thiago slotted home a dubious game-winning penalty.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the Dutch coach admitted the performance had been worse than any of Liverpool’s three previous losses.

“For me this was the worst of all the losses,” said Slot. Pressed for why he felt that way, the 47-year-old appeared to highlight Liverpool’s lack of fight against Brentford.

“I think we didn’t do the basics right especially in the first-half, but for parts of the second-half as well,” he said.

“They won more duels than us, more second balls than us. If you go here you know if you’re going to concede goals it’s not a surprise one is a set-piece and counter-attacks are also a big strength of theirs.”

How much lower can Liverpool sink?

Liverpool did manage to pick up a good result in midweek, battering Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1.

But in reality, there was little different to the display in Frankfurt to others Liverpool have put in this season, generally earlier in the campaign.

It was not that the Reds played especially well, they still had no real discernible shape to their play and relied on individual brilliance for their goals.

The return to losing on Saturday will not have been a surprise to anyone who has been watching Liverpool, but the real questions are how low can Slot’s team go and when will they get back on track?

The answer to both questions is impossible to answer. But if Slot cannot find solutions to these issues – and fast – it will soon become someone else’s problem.
