Matheus Cunha opened the scoring with a nice finish from the edge of the box before Casemiro made it two with a deflected effort.
Bryan Mbeumo netted a controversial third before former Red Devil Danny Welbeck pulled one back for Brighton with a well taken free kick. Albion substitute Charalampos Kostoulas made it interesting with a late header but Mbeumo settled nerves and sealed a morale-boosting three points for Ruben Amorim's team.
