Leeds United have set themselves a baseline guide of a point-per-game in their quest for survival this season.

In the past four seasons, including the one in which Leeds were relegated from the Premier League, a tally of 38 points would have seen a team beat the total earned by 18th place. But of course Leeds need to, in theory, be better than the team which finished 17th.

Tottenham Hotspur accumulated 38 points last season - the same amount Leeds chalked up in the 2022/23 survival campaign. For the two years in between, 38 points would have been a better total than of those who finished 17th.

So the guide target has been drafted up for a reason. An undercurrent story is the target of 10 wins for Daniel Farke. Friday’s win over West Ham United means Leeds have managed to claim three wins in the first nine games.

Going at such a rate would see the Whites end the season with 12 wins. That would be a great return to the Premier League - no team has been relegated having won 11 games.

The win over West Ham was vital for many reasons, including for confidence and belief. But perhaps more potently was what Leeds avoided by getting the victory - going four games without a win, risk sinking into the bottom three and dipping below the points-average aim.

Instead, Leeds have 11 points after nine games ahead of a very tricky upcoming six games. A trip to Brighton & Hove Albion is next before a visit to Nottingham Forest.

After the international break comes the home clash with Aston Villa before the treacherous eight-day run of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Supporters are aware that the games against these big hitters will likely not yield many points, if any.

Leeds United have slashed up to 50% off select kits and merch on their official club store, including this season's home shirt.

Anything achieved will be a bonus. So that makes the next three games important, and also underlines why the win over West Ham was so necessary after the woeful 2-0 loss to Burnley last weekend.

If Leeds do come out pointless in those three matches against Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool, then United need at least one win in the three preceding matches to give themselves a chance of staying on par with their points aim.

And then they would need a draw elsewhere, with just one loss recorded. Right now, Leeds are two points ahead of target so they would need to tally four points and get to 15 points from 12 matches - IF the following three games do indeed all end in defeats.

This, again, underscores why the Burnley defeat was so painful and the West Ham win so needed. Of course, overarching it all is that this is only a mere guideline.

The aim is to do better and to give themselves the best cushion possible. Also, their success will be measured on how teams around them do. The plight of some teams might aid United’s cause, or their success crank up the pressure.

Farke will remain cool-headed and ensure Leeds concentrate on themselves. Their three wins so far will give them belief that they can do battle and earn points against the Premier League’s mainstays.
