Bryan Mbeumo was a standout performer on Saturday evening and the Red Devils summer signing scored in the second half to put United 3-0 up against the Seagulls.
However, United managed to avoid a complete collapse at Old Trafford after Fabian Hurzeler saw his Brighton side mount a late comeback attempt in the second half.
Danny Welbeck netted a stunning free-kick past Senne Lammens before Charalampos Kostoulas scored for Brighton in injury time in the Premier League tie.

What Gary Neville said about Ruben Amorim’s decision in Man Utd’s 4-2 Premier League win vs Brighton at Old Trafford
Despite the fightback from Brighton through Danny Welbeck and Charalampos Kostoulas, Manchester United collected all three Premier League points.
Bryan Mbeumo had an impact for the second time in Saturday’s contest after the 26-year-old former Brentford star completed his brace late in injury time.
United manager Ruben Amorim made two key changes to his Red Devils side in the 70th minute, only four minutes before Brighton striker Welbeck scored on Saturday.
Amad Diallo made way for Patrick Dorgu and Kobbie Mainoo came on for Casemiro, with United leading Brighton 3-0 at the time the subs came on at Old Trafford.
Only a minute after Welbeck’s free-kick, Brighton were denied a potential second after Senne Lammens was called into action and saved Tom Watson’s effort.
Gary Neville was at Old Trafford for the Premier League match and the United legend said on Sky Sports that Amorim’s substitutions made a telling point.
“Ruben Amorim sent a message to his own players and the opposition with those substitutions that this game was over,” he explained.
“If that goes in [Tom Watson’s strike], it’s panic stations.”

Gary Neville’s reaction to Man Utd’s third Premier League win after the Brighton result
Despite his concerns over Amorim’s substitutions, Neville admitted that he felt the United manager had provided himself with some much-needed breathing room.
“The narrative coming into this game was that Manchester United couldn’t take a step back after what happened at Anfield last week and the win today was absolutely crucial,” he said.
“I think it has been Ruben Amorim’s best and most important week in the job.”
Neville continued: “I think it gives him a bit of time.
“I am not saying he’s off the hook, but Manchester United are up there towards the top of the league and it certainly takes a lot of pressure off him.”
United defeated Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford before the international break and they followed it up with a 2-1 win over Liverpool and their 4-2 victory over Brighton.
