Bruno Guimaraes scored a late winner as Newcastle United beat Fulham 2-1 at St James’ Park.

Bruno Guimaraes scored a 90th-minute winner as Newcastle clinched only their third win of the new Premier League season.

The Magpies took the lead in the game through Jacob Murphy’s first-half strike before Sasa Lukic equalised in the 56th minute.

Eddie Howe on Malick Thiaw ‘great performance’ v Fulham

As United pushed for a winner, gaps naturally emerged but Thiaw was imperious at cutting out the danger and keeping his team on the front foot.

Asked about Thiaw’s role in the closing stages, Howe told NewcastleWorld: “Yeah, I thought he gave a great performance in that moment because we're on top, but it only takes one slip from a defender to cost you, especially with the pace that Fulham had in attack today.

“I was very pleased with all the defenders in terms of limiting their counter-attack situations. Malick, in particular, as you say, dealt with some tricky situations really well.”

Following the win, the German defender took to Instagram and wrote: “Great push today Geordies! Double W ✅And thanks for the amazing support ⚫️⚪️”

And the comments were inundated with messages from his teammates.

Guimaraes replied “what a player man” while Will Osula wrote “machine” before adding a GIF of a Rolls Royce.

Fellow countryman Nick Woltemade also showed his appreciation by saying “bruder warum bist du so gut”, which translates to English as “bro why are you so fine”.

Malick Thiaw’s excellent start to life at Newcastle United

Thiaw joined Newcastle in the summer for £35million from AC Milan but had to be patient initially as Fabian Schar and Dan Burn continued their centre-back partnership from the previous season.

But a concussion for Schar during the 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League last month handed Thiaw an opportunity, and he hasn’t looked back.

The 24-year-old has started the last eight matches in all competitions. He has been deployed as the right-sided centre-back but played the final half-hour against Fulham on the left after Sven Botman was forced off with a head injury.

Fabian Schar makes his 150th appearance for Newcastle United

Schar replaced Botman and lined up on the right-side. It marked the former Switzerland international’s 200th Premier League appearance for the Magpies after joining from Deportivo La Coruna for just £3m in 2018.

On Schar, Howe said: “I think it was important for Fabi to come on and do well because it was a difficult moment for him. He's been an ever-present near enough since I've been here.

“Obviously, the challenge is greater this season with the arrival of Malick and Sven's form and Dan's form, but for all the defenders to step up and to play is not easy with the group of defenders that we have.

“I'm delighted with how he played today and that will do him the world of good.”
