Manchester United felt aggrieved after Danny Welbeck's free-kick - leading to Brighton's opening goal - was taken at least five yards in front of where it should have been.
Ruben Amorim's side were 3-0 ahead when the Seagulls were given a chance to pull one back. In the 72nd minute, Patrick Dorgu was penalised for getting in a tangle with Yankuba Minteh, who was running through on goal.
After Dorgu was handed a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor, VAR looked at the incident again and deemed that the caution didn't need upgrading. While United fans were relieved that the ex-Lecce man didn't get sent off, they were infuriated as the free-kick took place more than five yards ahead of where the foul was committed.
As seen in video and photo footage of the incident, Dorgu fouled Minteh when the Brighton forward was around 28 yards from goal. However, Welbeck took the eventual free-kick less than 23 yards away from the posts.
Although the free-kick was struck ahead of where it should have been, nothing should be taken away from Welbeck's strike, as the ex-United forward lofted his shot over the wall and beyond Senne Lammens.
Charalampos Kostoulas then pulled another goal back for Brighton to send a huge scare around Old Trafford, but United dug deep and scored a fourth in stoppage-time to wrap up a 4-2 win.
Bryan Mbeumo scored a brace, while Matheus Cunha and Casemiro also found the net for the Reds as they recorded a third straight Premier League win for the first time since August 2024.

Reflecting on his side's win against Brighton, Amorim said post-match: "I feel good. I think we played well but we suffered in the end, a little bit, our fault in the way we conceded the first goal.
"You can sense that, in that time of the game, we are near the fourth goal, not to suffer one. But they did everything. They run, they play with the ball, they kept the ball when it was needed. So it was a good game."
"You have the game under control and then you suffer a goal," Amorim added. "And then we suffer a little bit. They have a lot of talent. They have a lot of quality with the ball and they control that and they use that momentum to control the game. But we are improving in the way we respond to bad moments, and today, we did it again.
"We respond a little bit better and that's really important. We know how to suffer. If we suffer together, it's so much easier to win games."
