Newcastle United open to big ticketing change as meeting confirmed for December

Newcastle United famously had over 10,000 supporters in a waiting list for season tickets during the Kevin Keegan era.

Newcastle United are set to host a workshop with supporters in December where a potential season ticketing waiting list will be high on the agenda.

A famous 10,000-strong queue was formed in the 1990s during Kevin Keegan’s era as manager. The Magpies eventually expanded St James’ Park to its current capacity at the turn of the century.

Renewed optimism since the Saudi-backed takeover has resulted in thousands of fans struggling to buy tickets. Many walked away in protest during Mike Ashley’s ownership and find themselves unable to watch their beloved team.

Newcastle United confirm December meeting

Last month saw a meeting take place between senior Toon officials and the Fan Advisory Board. Minutes of the talk have now been released, with issues regarding ticketing, the stadium’s future and club crest being raised.

Head of Supporter Services, Sarah Medcalf, agreed to a workshop in December to discuss a season ticket waiting list further. FAB Chairman Michael McCarthy is pushing for the process to return to deliver more clarity for fans.

"By having a waiting list for season tickets, supporters will gain further understanding on timeframes - a question that is regularly asked without any answers,” he said. “We know that season tickets are in high demand, and everybody would love one, but also that people cannot always commit to these.

"The waiting list will allow fans to know how close they are to getting a season ticket. Further fan consultation will be held around this initiative. FAB welcomed the club's recognition of the importance of ensuring this initiative remains supporter-led."

Brad Miller on Newcastle United stadium

An update - some would argue non-update - was also given on the St James’ Park dilemma. Brad Miller, Newcastle’s Chief Operating Officer, revealed a decision has not yet been made despite promising one in early 2025.

“The Board continues to assess all stadium development options and has not yet reached a final decision,” he said, as quoted on the club website. “This remains a complex and long-term strategic consideration, with potential benefits for the Club, city and wider region.

“The priority is to ensure any decision is the right one - both in terms of feasibility and long-term impact. The process is ongoing and will be approached with the necessary rigour. Supporter Services has received 10 direct emails on the topic over the past six months. While volumes remain relatively low, it was acknowledged that the subject continues to generate interest and sentiment across the wider fanbase.”

Eddie Howe gives St James’ Park preference

Eddie Howe has previously opened up about wanting Newcastle to stay at their iconic home. He said last year: “What makes St James’ Park so unique is its position in the city. That makes it totally unique. I’d hate to see the stadium move because it dominates the eyeline of the whole city and you can see it from miles around. That’s totally inspiring.

“Wherever you are in (central) Newcastle you get a glimpse and that’s so powerful. When you’re in it, the atmosphere, the look of the stadium, it’s a beautiful thing. I love being there, I love experiencing games there.

“The first time I managed at St James’ Park with Bournemouth I was like ‘Wow, I’ve never managed in a stadium quite like that’. St James’ Park blew me and my staff away. If the club were to move they would lose something special.”
