Why Ravens could be in trouble with NFL for Lamar Jackson injury decision

The Baltimore Ravens may get in trouble with the NFL for the way they handled Lamar Jackson's injury status in Week 8.

Jackson hadn't practiced in three weeks due to a hamstring injury when he finally got back on the field Wednesday and was listed as limited.

The two-time MVP quarterback was listed as limited again Thursday.

When Friday's injury report came out, Jackson was listed as a full participant, and that's where the problem begins.

Why is the NFL investigating Ravens' handling of Lamar Jackson injury?

The investigation stems from Jackson's listing on Friday's injury report as a full participant.

On Saturday, the Ravens retroactively changed Jackson's status to limited.

It had been reported that he had only run with the scout team, which definitionally means he wasn't a full participant because he didn't take part in his normal depth chart role.

"The league will look into this," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told ESPN on Saturday. "The league reviews any matter involving a change to a player's status."

In a statement released Saturday, this is what the Ravens said: "Lamar Jackson was present for and participated fully in our entire Friday practice... Upon further evaluation today and after conferring with the league office, because Lamar didn't take any starter reps in practice, we updated our report to reflect his practice participation."

NFL injury reports exist in large part to limit gambling advantages for anyone with information. If the injury information is public, there conceptually is less chance for inside information.

That's why the league polices injury reports so closely to make sure they're accurate.

It's very possible the Ravens made this mistake with no ill intent whatsoever. But the NFL still has to look into it.
