Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones praised the attitude of his players after the Addicks snatched a 1-1 draw at Hull City thanks to substitute Luke Berry’s stoppage-time equaliser at the MKM Stadium.
Berry’s header earned his side a share of the spoils after Joe Gelhardt’s early second-half strike had put the Tigers ahead and had them on course for a fourth consecutive victory under Sergej Jakirovic, before the 91st-minute leveller.
The Addicks are the surprise package of the season so far after winning promotion via the League One play-off, but the Tigers have also shocked the pundits, who had them tipped to be among the struggling sides this campaign.
Victory looked to be City's when Gelhardt thumped in right at the start of the second half, and it looked like a professional job well done by the hosts, until they failed to deal with a James Bree corner into their box, which allowed Berry to pounce from close range.
“It’s an outstanding point. If you are any team in the Championship, seven points (from the last three games) is an excellent return," he said after seeing his side back up wins over Sheffield Wednesday and away at Ipswich Town.
“We have had to dig in. We made a big error to allow them to take the lead. To beat Sheffield Wednesday, to beat Ipswich on the road and to draw with a flying Hull (City) is great.
“I thought it was a fair result in the end. It would have been a real travesty if we had come away with nothing. We started really well in the first 10 minutes and had three big chances, but then it settled down.
“They had one chance in the first half which was a delivery in from the left-hand side and then it was always going to take a bit of quality, or a mistake, to break the deadlock and, for us, it ended up being a mistake - trying to dribble out of our own box and it gave them the opportunity to score, so I was disappointed with that because if we had done our basics, then we would have kept another clean sheet which would have given us the chance to win the game.
“You can be a bit more upbeat about a seven-point week in the Championship because that is outstanding," he then said to a reporter who suggested it had been a 'solid' week for the South London club.
"Getting a point in the Championship is excellent. I’m so proud of the group. This (result) isn’t in isolation because we have had seven points in a week.
“Sometimes I’m a bit animated when people question they are Luton players but they are my players. I signed them for that club. James Bree does what he does (with the corner) and Luke Berry does what he does.”
