Virgil van Dijk closes in on Jamie Carragher’s unwanted Liverpool record following Brentford defeat

Virgil van Dijk had another game to forget in a Liverpool shirt.

The problems persist for the Reds as despite picking up a win midweek against Eintracht Frankfurt, they returned to losing ways with a 3-2 defeat to Brentford.

The performance as a whole was, yet again, far from convincing, with only Dominik Szoboszlai really able to hold his head up high.

Van Dijk was just one player who struggled massively throughout, with the Dutchman unable to lead his team back onto the right path.

As well as this, he is closing in on a record held by Jamie Carragher, with this another one which no player will want.

Virgil van Dijk has conceded four penalties for Liverpool

With the game at 2-1 and still in the balance, even if Brentford were dominating, Liverpool just needed to steady the ship and do nothing silly so they could get back into it.

Van Dijk, however, had other ideas, and his rather silly and late challenge led to the referee giving a free-kick, only for it to be upgraded to a penalty when it was confirmed the contact was actually inside the box.

This is the fourth penalty he has conceded since joining Liverpool, with only four players conceding more for the Reds in their history.

Sami Hyypia and Phil Babb have both given away five, Martin Skrtel has conceded six, while Carragher is in the lead by quite a way on nine.

The scouser seems to have a few unwanted records at Liverpool, and with van Dijk having less than two years left on his contract, it is highly unlikely that it will be broken any time soon.

The Dutchman may feel a little hard done by for his challenge against Brentford given that it may not have been given if the referee knew it was in the box at first glance, however it is another one added to his tally regardless.

Virgil van Dijk needs to find some form

At the very beginning of the season, it looked as if van Dijk was one of the only players who looked himself, with his performances being fairly strong.

However, as the campaign has gone on, it appears to be rubbing off on him as he has struggled in games as of late.

This is one of the reasons Liverpool have not done as well as he is key to almost everything they do, with his leadership something that gets them over the line more often than not.

Of course, there is still plenty of time left in the season for some serious changes, although the captain’s form might start to become a bit of a worry.
