Leeds United won’t get relegated – The recent Premier League record says it all

Leeds United dominated the Championship last season and scored 100 points to earn promotion to the Premier League. Survival is their biggest priority, and all their plans to grow the club in the coming years are based on the Whites becoming an established top-flight side.

Daniele Farke was under some pressure going into the West Ham on Friday night. Back-to-back defeats had drained some of the early-season confidence, and doubts were raised about his ability to keep Leeds in the Premier League.

However, a 2-1 win over West Ham at Elland Road has released some of the pressure building on the team and their manager. They are now 15th in the Premier League, and look far better than the teams in the relegation zone at the moment.

The victory on Friday night also took Leeds to 11 points on the table from nine games, and that is an important threshold, which suggests the Whites are on course for Premier League survival.

Leeds United are on course to stay in the Premier League

The Whites are reasonably confident that they will survive in the Premier League, and point to the fact that they have been more than competitive against established Premier League sides.

West Ham have been struggling this season, but hadn’t lost at Elland Road since 2005 until Leeds beat them on Friday night. They were also good against top teams such as Bournemouth, Newcastle and Tottenham.

However, more than anything, recent record in the Premier League suggests Leeds are well on course to survive in the top flight this season.

Leeds are on 11 points from nine games, which puts them on par with Marcelo Bielsa’s side from the 2020/21 season, who finished ninth in the league.

However, the points haul seems even more important when you consider that every promoted team in the last ten years that amassed 11 points from their opening ten league games went on to survive in the Premier League.

The Whites have reached the 11-point mark with one game in hand, and now have history on their side as they look to stay in the top flight.

Leeds have been better than their current position

From the start of the season, Leeds have not looked like a side that could go down this season, despite the performance of promoted teams in recent years.

They have looked competitive, resilient and barring a defeat at Arsenal, they have not been outplayed by any team in their opening nine Premier League games.

Bournemouth Andoni Iraola even admitted that his side were outfought by Leeds in their 2-2 draw at Elland Road earlier in the season.

Leeds should have won that game, had no business losing to Tottenham at home and were desperately unlucky to lose at Fulham.

In fact, we consider xG, Leeds have underperformed their underlying stats, and should have been higher up the Premier League table.

Leeds are unlucky to be 15th in the table, and should have been somewhere around the top half of the table or just below those teams.

It is no surprise that Leeds are well on course to avoid relegation and just need to continue to show the same grit and determination for the rest of the season.
