Why Brandon Miller isn't playing vs. Wizards and what it means for Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets are set to face the Washington Wizards on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET, though they will be without Brandon Miller.

The 22-year-old swingman sustained a left shoulder injury in the second quarter of Saturday's 125-121 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers and did not return. He logged just nine minutes, recording four points and one assist while shooting 2-for-6 from the field.

According to the NBA's official injury report, Miller is listed as out with left shoulder soreness. While the 2023 No. 2 overall pick may still require further testing, the shoulder issue doesn't appear to be a long-term concern at this time. For now, he'll join Josh Green and Grant Williams on the sideline.

What Brandon Miller's absence means for Charlotte

Charlotte previously started rookie Kon Knueppel in Wednesday's season-opening win over the Brooklyn Nets but went with Collin Sexton in the starting five on Saturday. With Miller sidelined, it's likely both Sexton and Knueppel will start against the Wizards.

The Hornets’ projected starting lineup features LaMelo Ball, Sexton, Knueppel, Miles Bridges and rookie big man Ryan Kalkbrenner. All five of those players scored at least 14 points against the Sixers, with Ball leading the charge at 27 points.

Without Miller, additional players will need to absorb more minutes. Tre Mann, Tidjane Salaun and Sion James are all candidates to see an uptick in playing time. Additionally, Liam McNeeley could enter the rotation, having been a healthy scratch in the team's last two games.

As for Miller, his next chance to return to the court will come in Tuesday's matchup against the Miami Heat at 7:30 p.m. ET.
