An injury-time winner for Burnley against Wolves spared West Ham the embarrassment of sitting bottom of the Premier League.
That dubious honour now belongs to a Wanderers side suffering almost as much as the Hammers — but things are looking bleak in East London.
The bottom three, which also includes Nottingham Forest, are starting to become cut off from the rest of the division. It’s not just the points gap that’s worrying — the goal difference for all three sides is already in double figures, an incredible statistic with just nine games played.
Wolves have remained below West Ham
Perhaps most concerning for Wolves and West Ham is the so-called “eye test,” which makes it painfully clear that the football and tactics on display simply aren’t up to the level of the rest of the Premier League.
That said, at least the Midlanders showed some fight by coming from 2-0 down against Burnley — a flicker of spirit that West Ham are sorely lacking right now.
The real worry for the Hammers is that there are still two long months to go before the transfer window opens, and there’s little sign this team is capable of picking up points in the meantime.
