FOXBOROUGH — Six-time All Pro Myles Garrett was an absolute menace on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
The Browns defensive lineman set a franchise record — and new career high — with five sacks of Drake Maye. A pair of them came against rookie tackle Will Campbell.
Both times the Patriots tried to help Campbell with a chip from Hunter Henry. Both times it didn’t matter. On the second, Garrett managed to strip-sack Maye, but Jared Wilson pounced on the loose ball.
Following New England’s 32-13 win, Campbell assessed his performance at his stall in the Patriots locker room.
“He’s a really good player,” Campbell said. “He beat me a few times. It’s just part of the game. He gets paid a lot of money. He got me a couple times. I had to keep coming back and keep fighting. I’m just glad we got the win.”
After a slog of a first half, the Patriots offense broke the game open in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns. Campbell shared that a strong second half was a point of emphasis from the coaching staff this week.
“We just had to finish the game,” Campbell said. “Last week we didn’t come out and finish the game the way we wanted to against Tennessee. That’s something we talked about during the week: Playing 60 minutes of our game. Even when things weren’t going our way in the first half, to come in at halftime, talk about it, and just come back out.
“Defense made a bunch of great plays (today). They’ve been playing their (expletive) off. Making it easy on us. Giving us short fields at times. Kudos to them. They’re playing really, really well.”
As the Patriots notched their fifth straight win to improve to 6-2 on the season, Campbell believes his team’s chemistry is trending in the right direction.
“It’s growing every week. I think it’s really good,” Campbell said. “It’s only going to continue to get better. We’ve got a bunch of great guys. A bunch of good players. So just looking forward to the future.”
