The Buffalo Bills were back in top form on Sunday, cruising to a lopsided 40-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
The win improves the Bills’ record to 5-2 and erases some of the pain from their two-game losing streak. In Week 5, the team lost to the New England Patriots (20-23) and in Week 6 it suffered an upset loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
NFL games are filled with special moments, and this one was no exception. During the contest, Bills quarterback Josh Allen surpassed Cam Newton for the most NFL games in NFL history with at least one rushing and one passing touchdown.
Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa intercepted Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton in the second quarter, which helped Allen score a 1-yard rushing touchdown. The passing touchdown happened early in the third quarter, when Allen threw to receiver Khalil Shakir for a 54-yard touchdown.
The Buffalo Bills took to X after the scores to announced that Allen now has the “most games with a passing and rushing touchdown in NFL history.” He surpassed Newton, who previously held the record with 45 games.
The good news didn’t stop there. Following Allen’s second rushing touchdown of the day, the team took to social media to announce that he and running back James Cook had also made history together.
“Josh Allen & James Cook have joined Titans Ryan Tannehill & Derrick Henry (2 games) as the only QB/RB duos with multiple games where each had 2+ rushing TDs,” the Bills’ PR team shared in a post on X.
The Bills benched their starters in the second half after running up a 40-3 lead. When the game concluded, Allen had completed 12 of 19 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown, according to Pro Football Reference. He also posted a passer rating of 108.0, according to ESPN data.
Ahead of the Panthers game, Allen spoke with reporters about how difficult it was for the players to go on bye week after losing two in a row.
“Listen, we got a lot of work to do,” Allen said, according to the Bills’ official website. “But this is a team that has a lot of guys that want to do that work, that care for each other. And we’re just excited for another opportunity this week.”
