Bills' $68 Million Defensive Star to ‘Miss Time' After Serious Injury

The Buffalo Bills snapped their two-game losing streak coming out of the bye week, but their 40-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers came at a cost.

Defensive tackle Ed Oliver left the contest with an injury during the first half, and the news in the postgame was considerably worse.

“Bills standout DT Ed Oliver biceps injury is a key one to watch. I’m told the injury will force Oliver to miss game action. Tests coming to determine how long,” Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported via social media. “Oliver, who got a sack today, had his left arm in a sling after the game. Another blow to #Bills thin DT room.”

Oliver missed multiple games earlier in the season due to an ankle injury, and Sunday against Carolina was just his third start of the campaign. The uncertainty around Oliver’s new injury potentially creates yet another need for Buffalo on the trade market, which closes on Nov. 4.

“The Bills got defensive linemen Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi back from suspensions this week and they may be in the market for more help up front if Oliver's absence is set to be a lengthy one,” Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk wrote Sunday.

Buffalo is a strong candidate to add a wide receiver ahead of the deadline, while the secondary is also an issue with deficiencies at both cornerback and safety.

The Bills may be able to find impact players in the secondary and/or the receivers room, though the market on the defensive interior is considerably less loaded in 2025. ESPN compiled a list of the top 25 players who could move teams in the coming days, and while there are a few edge-rushers in that mix, there is not a single defensive tackle in the group.

Oliver is 27 years old and playing on a four-year, $68 million deal that keeps him under contract through 2027.
