Justin Fields gets vulnerable, reveals how his faith powered him to Jets' first win of the season

The New York Jets picked up their first win the season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals with an improbable fourth quarter comeback.

The Jets entered Week 8 with a 0-7 record, and seemingly one of the most disjointed teams in the NFL.

However, after the Jets went down 31-16 in the third quarter, and 38-24 in the fourth quarter, New York stormed back for 15 unanswered point in the final eight minutes of the game to pick up its first win of the season.

Justin Fields gets vulnerable about his faith

Throughout the week, there were questions to who would start at quarterback for the Jets in Week 8 against the Bengals.

Justin Fields had been the starter all year, but the Jets were 0-7, had scored 17 combined points in their last two games, and Fields had 91 combined passing yards with 12 sacks in those two games.

However, Fields did get the start, and he responded with 244 passing yards and a touchdown, completing 21 of his 32 passing attempts, and added 31 rushing yards.

After the game, Fields got vulnerable with reporters on the internal battles he faced throughout the week.

"I'm going to get pretty vulnerable right here, but this week, I found myself in my closet crying on the ground, laying down, not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles," Fields said. "I felt like, you know, I was built to handle that and I was put in place to handle this situation.

"But in that moment when I was talking to my best friend, you know, how hard it was, and just not wavering, faith-wise. Yesterday, I was just praying over and over and over again."

In professional sports especially, you don't see many players display this level of vulnerability with the media, let alone after the week Fields had with questions around his playing status.

However, the young quarterback leaned into his faith, and couldn't help but let the emotions out after the Jets first win of the season on Sunday.

"I was on the field, I was damn near about to start crying, but not because of we won, but just because of the goodness of God," Fields said. "Just how everything works for the greater good, everything that I've been through this past week, everything that we've been through as a team these past seven weeks.

"It was a lot of ups and downs, you know, I got a lot of support from my teammates, from my brothers, from my family, from my friends, and most of all, I'm just thankful for the Lords that he blessed me."

Fields said he was praying over and over again this week for a win, and in the fourth quarter he was able to bring his team back and rejuvenate a team that seemed helpless coming into the game.

"All that to say is, you know, God is real. God is good," Fields said. "And everything that we go through in life is for a purpose."

Fields performance on Sunday with the all the questions surrounding the Jets and him personally, and his willingness to get real with the media after the game is the type of moment that can speak volumes to his teammates.

The Jets are now 1-7, and nobody believes the season is going to turn into some magical run to the playoffs. However, Fields has instilled a different level of confidence and respect in his teammates and coaching staff.

The Aaron Glenn era hadn't started strong in New York, but the energy and effort has always been there, and Sunday is a type of performance that change a team's perspective, mindset and confidence level.
