Micky Van de Ven stole the show but it was another Tottenham Hotspur defender that caught the eye of Jamie Redknapp.
Tottenham Hotspur continued their impressive away form in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday evening, lifting Thomas Frank’s side to third in the table after nine fixtures.
It was an eye-catching display from Spurs with Micky Van de Ven bagging a brace before a late Pape Matar Sarr goal put the result beyond any doubt. Frank’s men bounced back from last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa and remain unbeaten on the road this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Jamie Redknapp praised Tottenham Hotspur but admitted that Thomas Frank must now find a way to replicate that form on the road back at home in north London.
Jamie Redknapp on ‘excellent’ Tottenham Hotspur defender
Van de Ven stole the show on Sunday but Redknapp also singled out one of his ‘excellent’ defensive colleagues for praise. Redknapp said: “I think that would be the one question for Thomas, how can they turn this great away form and get it at home as well and all of a sudden they’ll become a real force. So far, I like what I’m seeing, it’s so important they bounced back after that Villa result. You felt they’d be fragile today if things didn’t go their way, if Everton got one, would they get back in the game? They stood strong.
“I was very impressed. I thought Danso was excellent. It’s not always easy when you’re the sort of third centre back but he came in and I thought his responsibility and desire, heading things, and he’s also got an incredibly long throw on him which is a big advantage. A lot of good things to take away from Tottenham today.”
Danso arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from French outfit Lens in January, initially on loan before an obligation to make that move permanent for £21 million this summer. The 27-year-old didn’t start any of the first seven league games this season but has now made the starting XI in back to back Premier League outings.
Spurs praised for ‘strong’ performance at Everton
Speaking about the team more generally, Redknapp said: “A bit of everything [impressed me], with every game away from home you have to be strong. The two centre-backs in front of you do really well, Van de Ven and Danso headed everything. Good in both boxes, the two full-backs against Everton have to be spot on. Palhinha, Bentancur in midfield marshalled it, were strong both defensive and from an offensive points of view.
“He was the star man today Micky Van de Ven. We’re seeing a slightly different side to him, everyone talks about his pace, his speed, the way he defends but seeing him so effective in set piece situations is going to be a big part of the game. What Thomas Frank has brought from his Brentford days to Tottenham is he’s going to make sure those details are spot on.”
