Bruno Guimaraes hopes that his dramatic late winner against Fulham proves Newcastle United aren't a "soft touch" any more.

The midfielder was ready to take full responsibility for the loss of two points after missing a second half header in front of the Gallowgate End before redeeming himself in spectacular fashion.

The Brazil international pounced in the 90th minute to claw three points from the fire after Marco Silva's side came close to a creditable draw. Having thrown away a lead handed to them by Jacob Murphy, the Magpies started the second half in sluggish manner and allowed Sasa Lukic to equalise at the Leazes End.

But just when it looked like Newcastle had capitulated, and lost another lead this season, after collapsing against Arsenal and Liverpool earlier in the campaign. However, Newcastle capped off a great week after beating Benfica to post three Premier League points on the board.

Bruno emerged after firing home after William Osula's shot had been pushed out by Bernd Leno to say: "We were not at our best to be fair, but even with our difficulties, we found a way to win the game.

"It was a special moment to score at the end because we have been punished that way against Liverpool and Arsenal.

"We have suffered at the end of games, but against Fulham, it was our turn to find a way to win. I was very pleased for everyone.

"It is not easy to play Tuesday-Saturday (after Benfica) and we have to keep it going.

"But I am very happy. I feel the complete opposite as they were soft goals against those teams."

Bruno revealed that there were contrasting scenes after Fulham from the Liverpool and Arsenal games as music blared out of the home dressing room.

The South American said: "We were at each other's throats after Liverpool and Arsenal, but after Fulham we just wanted to hug each other.

"It was a very happy moment for everyone. We found a way to win but must keep it going."

Bruno took until December last season to score the first of his five goals last term, but he is already sitting pretty on three so far this season and is hungry for more.

Bruno said: "The staff has asked me a lot this season to get in the box more. I am smelling the goal more this season. So I was in the right place in the right moment.

"I wanted the ground to swallow me up when I missed the the header (second half chance) but I wanted to put myself in a position to give myself an opportunity where I would not miss. It was a beautiful moment for me to score in front of the Gallowgate End, my whole family was there, wife, kids and parents, so we will have a good night."

Newcastle now face another critical clash at St James' Park in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup with their trophy defence on the line. But Bruno feels that Newcastle can book a quarter-final slot if they show the same spirit as Saturday.

Bruno said: "This was proof that this team will fight until the end. We will not give anything up for this club.

"It was a great shift from us and a great move to win it even though we are not at our best. We found that way to win it.

"Tottenham is a big, big moment. We won the Carabao Cup last season to make history.

"On Monday, we start to focus on Spurs, now we will enjoy this one, we know there is a big game coming. "Hopefully we can get eight hours sleep in."
