Alan Shearer names Premier League club he watched as a boy that isn’t Newcastle United

Alan Shearer is a Newcastle United legend but admitted to watching another Premier League club as a youngster.

Alan Shearer has named Liverpool as the club he would have played for if he never joined Newcastle United or Blackburn Rovers.

And in comments that are likely to sting Toon supporters given the recent summer transfer window, Shearer admitted to standing on the Kop for an FA Cup game as a youngster. The 55-year-old is synonymous with the Magpies due to his 10-year spell as talisman.

Shearer has often insisted he has no regrets about staying at his boyhood club - turning down a bucketload of trophies elsewhere. He retired in 2006 as Newcastle’s and the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Alan Shearer makes Liverpool confession

Speaking to Football Focus, Shearer confessed to watching Liverpool as a youngster and, if Newcastle or Blackburn never existed, he would have signed for the Reds. This is hardly ideal news to United fans who are still reeling from losing Alexander Isak in the summer.

“Other than this great football club (Newcastle), probably Liverpool,” Shearer said. “I went to the Kop when I was a young boy to watch an FA Cup game. But I was more than happy with my choice of being here at Newcastle and Blackburn.”

Michael Owen and Alan Shearer beef

In 2019, detested former Newcastle striker Michael Owen tried to expose Shearer for wanting a Liverpool move during Sir Bobby Robson’s reign as manager. He tweeted: “Not sure you are as loyal to Newcastle as you make out mate.

"I distinctly remember you being inches away from signing for Liverpool after Sir Bobby Robson put you on the bench. You tried everything to get out."

Shearer surprisingly claimed he is opening to Newcastle moving stadium providing the club remains in the city centre. He added: “I would be for that. I understand the need to grow. If it were to stay in the city centre, because that’s what makes it so special and unique about this place, it’s right in the middle. If it’s not too far from here I would be for that.

“I’m pretty sure the rest of the Newcastle fans would be too. That’s not taking any of the great memories away. We’ve had some amazing times here at St James’ Park. But the need to move on is really important too.”
