The former Crystal Palace owner is reported to have sent a £400 million bid to Premier League outfit Wolves.
Former Crystal Palace owner John Textor is reportedly looking at a bid for Championship clubs QPR and Charlton Athletic as reports of a £400 million offer to invest in Wolves emerges.
The 60-year-old sold his 43% minority stake in Crystal Palace this summer to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson after his multi-club ownership cost the Eagles their place in the Europa League due to UEFA rules. Textor currently owns stakes in Brazilian outfit Botafogo, French side Olympique Lyonnais and Belgium’s RWDM Brussels.
It’s now touted that the businessman wants a British club in his portfolio once again. With Wolves in crisis, winless this season and six points adrift of safety, Textor could reportedly swoop in.
John Textor ‘looking at’ QPR and Charlton Athletic bid
The American is said to have made an offer of £150 million with a further £262.3 million in shares to Wolves. If that falls through, Textor is thought to have a list of other potential investments.
The Athletic report that if Textor is to buy an English club again, ‘it is more likely to be a Championship side’ because they are ‘cheaper and more suited to his multi-club approach’. Charlton Athletic and QPR are named as two clubs that the businessman has thought about.
Sheffield Wednesday, Watford and Derby County are also listed with the report suggesting that the five teams mentioned are just a shortlist of clubs that Textor has considered.
Wolves continue to insist that the club is not for outright sale and that they are only looking for additional outside investment. It is unlikely that the £400 million bid will be accepted.
Textor is said to be a fan of Wolves’ penchant for recruiting Portuguese players and the club’s desire to introduce South American talent to European football, which aligns with the Eagles Football Club strategy.
Ex Crystal Palace owner held talks with QPR in 2024
The Athletic had reported that Textor tried to buy QPR in 2024 at the same time when he was linked with a takeover at Everton. The former Crystal Palace owner is said to have made a sales pitch to the owners at Loftus Road with the view to make the Championship side part of Eagles Football.
Those talks did not progress with both sides reportedly ‘miles apart’ on their valuation. The pitch was that shares in QPR would be in exchange for shares in the New York Stock Exchange listed Eagle Football.
Textor also registered his interest in taking over at Sheffield Wednesday this summer amid the Championship club’s financial turmoil. He said: "It's true that I am looking for a traditional English club to buy, or with which I can partner... I just have not spoken with anybody at Sheffield Wednesday yet and I am monitoring the situation, hoping to better understand it.
"I'm definitely interested. It's a lot to solve in a short amount of time with regards to taking advantage of the transfer window but it's definitely a club and community I would like to help.
"I often cite [Wednesday] as an example of what's wrong with football today. The lack of parity, because of the influence of money and I wish there was a system where the Sheffield Wednesdays of the world could be champions again."
