For a brief moment Vitor Pereira united a fanbase. Out drinking with supporters after wins, he was the down-to-earth boss who made Wolves tick. That's why it is so sad to see the breakdown in his relationship with the club's fans in just six months.
The nadir was reached on Sunday as he was dragged away from the South Bank with fans chanting "You're getting sacked in the morning".Did that really happen ? It's not on video is it ? The questions that so often follow a heavy night. Added to the hanxiety is the very real threat that Wolves are going to be relegated.
With just two points from nine games, this is even worse than Gary O'Neil's start to last season.
O'Neil had terrible fixtures that sucked the confidence from the squad but Pereira's side have already lost against all three promoted clubs. You couldn't say they're favourites for a match now until December 3 when they face fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest. The general ire of fans is first towards the owners Fosun. They took Wolves to the heights of European football but have shown a lack of ambition since. They are poor at showing and articulating that they care. Pereira is much better at reflecting the passion of fans even if it has culminated with fire meeting fire.
The players know they need to show more commitment on the pitch.
Striker Jorgen Strand Larsen posted on social media today: "I love this club and I haven't shown enough this season so far, as I also have been pushing through an injury."Wolves have sold their best players in recent years but they broke tradition to keep hold of Stand Larsen this summer when Newcastle wanted him.
Taking the emotion out of it, the model of buying low to sell high has worked for Wolves, but it now shows signs of breaking with disastrous consequences.
Ladislav Krejci is possibly the only summer signing who anyone else in the Premier League would take right now. That's not to say the others can't turn things round.Their task is easier than Pereira's. He needs to get a result against Chelsea on Wednesday night in the only competition that's given them joy so far this season.Wolves are the only Midlands team left in the Carabao Cup.
If they're still in it after Chelsea come to town then maybe, just maybe, Pereira won't have had his last night out in Wolverhampton.
