MLB wants to be a little more like the NFL, featuring a host of musical performances during the World Series this year. But die-hard baseball fans are nonplussed, confused and frustrated by the programming shift. After Pharrell Williams ushered in Game 1 of the 2025 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays, the Jonas Brothers came in during Game 2.

Their performance was part of a Stand Up to Cancer tribute, during which players, coaches, fans, and the brothers themselves held up signs honoring loved ones affected by cancer. The brothers held up a sign honoring their dad, Kevin Jonas Sr., who is a cancer survivor, MLB reports. The league and its 30 clubs are also founding donors of Stand Up to Cancer.

Despite the moving tribute, many baseball fans took to social media to express their disappointment at a musical act—not necessarily the Jonas Brothers specifically—for “interrupting” a World Series game.

“Sorry, this isn’t the Super Bowl; there is no half time show. So ridiculous,” wrote one commenter on Instagram. “Was anyone else completely confused by the half time concert at a baseball game?! I mean, just why?” commented another.

The brothers took it all in stride, with Joe Jonas even commenting on MLB’s Instagram post with a cheeky, “Why these guys?”

At Game 1 in Toronto, fans also weren’t too keen on the appearance of hometown superstar Drake, who was not there as an artist, but as a fan. Nevertheless, the MLB’s notoriously superstitious fans saw his attendance as an omen—Drake is widely considered a sports curse.

The latest iteration of the Drake Curse saw the artist infamously bet $1 million on the Maple Leafs during the NHL playoffs earlier this year. His team then crashed out hard in Game 7 of the semifinal series against the Panthers.

As a result, Blue Jays fans in particular weren’t enthused to see the Canadian sports curse-bearer. “Curse is in the building,” quipped one fan on the former Twitter. “This is the last man I wanna see within 400 metres of my World Series team,” wrote another.

Despite the presence of Drizzy, the Blue Jays won Game 1, beating the Dodgers 11-2. However, the Dodgers defeated the Blue Jays in Game 2 of the World Series, 5-1.

Game 3 takes place in Los Angeles on October 27. Brad Paisley will perform the U.S. national anthem, while JP Saxe will perform the Canadian national anthem. At Game 4, the dual anthems will be performed by Tinashe (U.S.) and Deborah Cox (Canada), and Sofia Carson (U.S.) and Rufus Wainwright (Canada) at Game 5.
