The Minnesota Vikings officially have a quarterback problem.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, quarterback Carson Wentz is out for the rest of the season due to his shoulder injury that will require surgery.
"Vikings QB Carson Wentz will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and miss the rest of the 2025 season, sources tell The Insiders. Wentz gutted it out as long as he could. But he was in severe pain Thursday night in L.A. and now will get the shoulder fixed," Pelissero reported.
Wentz entered the Thursday night matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers already dealing with a shoulder injury. He then went on to take a beating and was clearly in serious pain, so this news isn't all that surprising.
The Vikings have a QB problem
Wentz was signed to be J.J. McCarthy's backup, but he was also a veteran insurance policy just in case McCarthy didn't pan out in his first season as the starter.
Now, the Vikings only have rookie Max Brosmer, which clearly isn't going to cut it for a Minnesota team that is hoping to make the playoffs.
The Vikings need to go out and acquire another veteran quarterback. A lot of people will point to a reunion with Kirk Cousins, but that wouldn't be a wise move given how expensive he could be and his clear decline.
Instead, the Vikings should target one of the New York Giants' signal-callers, Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston.
Winston is probably the better player at this point after what we've seen out of Wilson in recent years with the Giants and Steelers, and he's under contract in 2026, so he could be a solution next year.
Wilson, meanwhile, will be a free agent next offseason, although that might be attractive to Minnesota because it gives them more flexibility to go in another direction in 2026.
Either way, the Vikings need to make a move and we would expect one in the near future.
