In the aftermath of a 44-24 defeat in Denver that exposed alarming defensive flaws, Jerry Jones didn’t mince words: the Cowboys are not simply one player away from turning things around. His trade-deadline comments sent a clear message — expectation for action is growing as the season begins to slip away.

After the loss, Dallas slipped to 3-4-1, surrendering 426 total yards and averaging 7.5 yards per play as the Broncos piled on big plays at will. Head coach Matt Eberflus’ defense has now allowed at least 37 points three times this season, prompting uncharacteristic urgency from the Cowboys’ long-time owner and general manager.
When asked directly if Dallas was “one player away” on defense, Jones replied: “I think we’re not. I think we’re more than that away, but what we’re closer to than it looks, in my mind, is executing better on defense.” He added that despite the discouraging score line, his “temperament” remains ready to act: “If I saw a proposition for us to help this team, no matter what this score was today, then I would look at it on the merits of helping this team.”

While the remarks stop short of committing to specific trades, the tone is unmistakable: Dallas is preparing to engage in the market and address holes, particularly along the defensive front and secondary. But Jones also warned fans not to expect swift fixes simply because the calendar says the trade deadline is near. “A loss is discouraging, but as far as my temperament… I would completely look at it on the merits of the team both for next week or the week after, or for the longer term.”
The numbers tell the story: Dallas’ defense ranks among the worst in key categories such as yards allowed and big-play frequency; meanwhile, the offense, though talented, can’t cover for repeated lapses. With the trade deadline looming and the Cowboys now eight days from the crucial cutoff, Jones’ remarks will reverberate in scouting rooms, front offices — and among frustrated fans.
