Green Bay Packers see former tight end sign with rival Minnesota Vikings

The Green Bay Packers made a series of roster moves ahead of their Week Eight matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, moves that, as it turned out, played a crucial role in the team securing the win. One of these was the highly anticipated return of Christian Watson to the field. As fans recall, the fourth-year wide receiver missed the first six games of the season this year as he recovered from a torn ACL suffered in Week 18 of the 2024 season.

In his first game of the year, Watson had four receptions for 85 yards, including a 33-yard reception on a throw that saw quarterback Jordan Love throw across his body and the field to link up with his big wide receiver deep in the red zone. Additionally, Watson played a crucial role blocking for his fellow pass catchers, allowing tight end Tucker Kraft, in particular, to make big plays throughout the game.

In order to add Watson to the active roster, though, Green Bay had to waive one of their other players, one who was just claimed by the Minnesota Vikings.

Former Green Bay Packers tight end Ben Sims claimed by the Minnesota Vikings

Green Bay Packers tight end Ben Sims (89) participates in drills during the third day of training camp on July 25, 2025, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

In order to make room for Watson on the active roster, the Packers decided to waive third-year tight end Ben Sims. He did not last long on the waiver wire, though, as the Vikings swooped in and claimed him on Monday afternoon:

As one can see from the post above, Sims originally signed with Minnesota as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. He was picked up by Green Bay, though, when he failed to make the Vikings’ 53-man roster.

In his first two seasons with the Packers, Sims played in all 34 regular season games and caught eight passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.

This season, though, he only appeared in three games after seeing John Fitzpatrick take over the third tight end snaps that Sims had gotten in 2023 and 2024.
