Why Celtics are starting Josh Minott in place of Hugo Gonzalez

The Boston Celtics are playing their fourth game of the season.

They're already going with their third different starting lineup.

Out on Monday night is Hugo Gonzalez. In is Josh Minott.

The Celtics take on the New Orleans Pelicans, and they're just trying to figure out what works.

Why is Josh Minott starting?

Minott is starting as head coach Joe Mazzulla continues to try and figure out what he's got.

Not having Jayson Tatum this season due to his torn Achilles has forced the Celtics to try things.

Minott is the latest attempt at getting a spark to start games.

He's just 22, and he's new to Boston from the Timberwolves.

"I was high on Minott coming out of Memphis, but he’s spent the last three years marooned at the end of the Minnesota bench while a deep, veteran team chased the top seeds in the West," writes The Athletic's John Hollinger. "With a move to Boston, that will not be the case. The one player definitely ahead of him on the depth chart at power forward (Sam Hauser) might end up being traded at some point to get the Celtics under the luxury tax, and the overall depth situation virtually requires Minott to play if he can demonstrate any rotation-level ability at all."

This will be a great chance for Minott to prove he belongs in these long-term plans.
