The Denver Broncos entered Sunday riding high at 6-2 after dismantling the Dallas Cowboys 44-24. Their strong start has been built on the back of an elite defense, anchored by cornerback Patrick Surtain II, last year’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year. But Sunday’s dominant performance came with a significant cost that could affect Denver’s playoff push.
Surtain exited the game with an injury, and subsequent tests revealed a pectoral issue that will sideline the team’s defensive captain for an extended stretch.

While the injury won’t end his season, the timeline remains concerning for a team that’s relied heavily on his shutdown ability.
The injury is considered week-to-week but could ultimately result in a stint on injured reserve, which would mean a minimum of four games missed. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the expected timeline for Surtain’s absence.

“Broncos star CB Patrick Surtain II is dealing with a pectoral injury and is expected to miss 4–6 weeks,” Schultz reported. “No surgery is needed, but I’m told the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will get a second opinion this week to confirm the timeline.”

The injury occurred under particularly frustrating circumstances. Surtain had already dealt with an ankle issue earlier in the game, briefly leaving before returning to action.

However, he strained his left arm while attempting to tackle Cowboys receiver George Pickens after a pass completion. He got up from the play in clear discomfort, holding the left side of his chest.
Losing Surtain represents a crushing blow for Denver. His ability to erase one half of the field allows defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to dial up pressure without hesitation. That kind of freedom disappears when your top corner goes down.
Riley Moss now steps into the top cornerback role, with Ja’Quan McMillian, Jahdae Barron, and Kris Abrams-Draine expected to take on heavier workloads.
With the trade deadline approaching on November 4, the Broncos might look to swing a deal for immediate defensive help to stabilize the secondary and keep their strong season on track.
