Matt Maher: Vitor Pereira's bust-up with fans was unprecedented but Wolves' problems run far deeper

The image of the Wolves head coach, fist-clenched, eyes staring directly into the camera as he roared into the South Bank after Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Burnley perfectly encapsulated the raw emotions of a season now perched on a powder keg.

As a piece of theatre it was extraordinary and round these parts almost unprecedented due to Pereira’s presence.

For many, the scenes after Sunday’s final whistle brought back echoes of the 2013 defeat to Burnley which effectively confirmed Wolves' relegation to League One, when a pitch invasion saw players confronted by supporters and a hole punched in the home dugout.

The situation now is nowhere near so dire as then. This was also a case of the players going to see the fans, rather than the other way round.

Yet to see a head coach involved in such exchanges is unusual. Typically, they stay away from confrontation. Steve Bruce didn’t even react when a cabbage was thrown in his direction during his final match as Villa boss.

You knew then Bruce was a goner. Pereira does not yet appear at the end of the road but letting his anger loose so publicly will not have helped his chances of staying employed.

The Portugeuse, we already knew, is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. When things were going well it worked in his favour, helping to build a connection between the head coach and fans. It is only a few months since he was literally toasting his success with them in the city’s pubs.
