Just over two years ago, Leeds United had been relegated. The 49ers had completed their takeover and needed a new manager, eventually appointing Daniel Farke – but he wasn’t the first choice.
Sam Allardyce had taken charge for the last four Premier League games of the season, but after Leeds were relegated, the 49ers opted to find themselves a new manager and went for Farke’s experience.
However, there were numerous options linked with Leeds at the time. New Sweden manager Graham Potter was one the club tried to lure to Elland Road, but to no avail. Farke joined on a four-year deal.
Another manager Leeds tried to convince with a move to Elland Road at the time was Brendan Rodgers. But having tried to lure Rodgers to Yorkshire despite the club’s relegation, Rodgers returned to Celtic.

Leeds wanted Brendan Rodgers ahead of Daniel Farke in 2023
Before Farke’s arrival, Phil Hay reported that Rodgers was the one Leeds “really wanted” above any other manager. However, Hay conceded that it would prove to be difficult to be able to convince Rodgers.
“[They are] trying to wrap up the manager process this week. Rodgers they really want, but not easy to persuade. Farke impressed in initial discussions. DOF/players? Won’t develop until head coach sorted.”
Fast forward until now, and Rodgers is available again. It came out of the blue on Monday but after Celtic were beaten to surprise Premiership leaders Hearts on the weekend, Rodgers tendered his resignation.

Pressure increases on Daniel Farke with Rodgers liked at Leeds
There has been plenty of talk north of the border regarding Rodgers’ relationship with the Celtic board and frustration around investment and player recruitment. Certainly, the Old Firm sides are getting worse.
Despite winning the League and League Cup double last season, Rodgers has opted to leave Celtic. For now, Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney will take interim charge. For Rodgers, a move south is likely.

The former Liverpool, Leicester, Watford and Swansea gaffer is expected to be waiting patiently by the phone for a Premier League job. The pressure ramps up on Farke, given the 49ers’ interest in Rodgers.
Despite being involved now at Rangers, the 49ers and Paraag Marathe are clearly large admirers of the Northern Irish gaffer. Now that he is available, and Leeds preferred him to Farke, the pressure increases.
Leeds are ticking along nicely under Farke, back in the Premier League. But a couple of defeats ahead of the November break to Brighton and Forest, with Rodgers now available, could force a decision.
