Newcastle United cheekily troll Liverpool with subtle Alexander Isak dig

Newcastle United have posted a cheeky picture on Instagram of new Toon cult hero Nick Woltemade.

Eagle-eyed Newcastle United supporters believe the club’s media team have fired a subtle dig at former striker Alexander Isak.

It is no secret that the Swede has become persona non grata on Tyneside. Previously worshipped by fans, Isak burned all bridges at St James’ Park when he forced a summer move to Liverpool.

The 26-year-old refused to train or play for Newcastle before eventually getting his move on deadline day. Toon supporters - quite rightly - have “hate-watched” every second of Isak’s poor start to life on Merseyside.

Nick Woltemade the new cult hero

Just one Carabao Cup goal from eight Liverpool games has hardly set the world alight following his £130million move. By contrast, his replacement, Nick Woltemade, has enjoyed a fine start in black-and-white stripes.

The German arrived for a club-record £69million and already has five goals to his name. Yoane Wissa is also waiting in the wings to contribute once he returns from a knee injury.

Cheeky Alexander Isak dig

Many Newcastle fans are adamant they have spotted a subtle dig at Isak from the club’s social media team. A picture taken of Woltemade during the 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday, at first glance, appears innocent.

However, look a little closer and the placement of the advertising hoardings have gone down favourably with supporters. The words “invested in better” - a PIF slogan - can be seen carefully placed behind the striker.

A coincidence? Or a thinly-veiled swipe at Newcastle’s fallen angel? You can be the judge of that one…

‘Doesn’t benefit anyone’ - Alexander Isak

While on international duty earlier this month, Swedish media pressed Isak on the Newcastle drama. He is preferring to move on - insisting that dragging up the saga does not benefit either party.

"It's nothing I want to dwell on now,” Isak said, as quoted by ESPN. “It doesn't benefit anyone, neither me nor Newcastle so let it be. I'm working hard to push myself and play my game. Things have been a bit tougher for us (Liverpool). I believe that as the team improves and things start to flow better, it will also go better for me.”

Isak has also suggested he now plays for a team where the city “has a good relationship with the fans” - bizarre comments from someone previously worshipped on Tyneside. He added: "I've been really happy so far. A city where the team has a very good relationship with the fans, which is important. It's been nice so far.”
