West Ham look to have suffered a significant injury blow as they look to turn things around.
West Ham are said to have suffered a major injury blow as things go from bad to worse for the Hammers. It has been a nightmare start to the season for the Iron, who are currently second from bottom in the Premier League having accumulated only only four points from nine games.
Graham Potter picked up three of those points, but he was sacked after a disastrous start, and it has not been easy for Nuno Espirito Santo to turn things around. Not only has the Portuguese boss inherited a sub-standard squad, but he is also working with the club in turmoil, with fans continuing to protest against owner David Sullivan.
Friday night saw West Ham beaten again, this time by Leeds United, who could end up being relegation rivals, and it gets no easier next time out, with the Hammers facing Newcastle United. Days of winning the Conference League feel a decade away at this point, with a relegation battle looking very likely this season.
What won’t help West Ham case are injuries, and it seems Santo has been handed a major injury blow. Konstantinos Mavropanos is said to have suffered a hamstring tear after coming off against Brentford recently, and it’s reported that the defender could be sidelined for up to eight weeks.
ExWHUEmployee told West Ham Way: “It gets bad to worse for the club, with Mavropanos having suffered a serious hamstring tear, which sees him unavailable around 4-6 weeks. It’s a huge blow for the club and Nuno (Espirito Santo) as we desperately seek to turn around a dreadful situation we find ourselves in.”
Santo confirmed that the defender had undergone a scan when speaking before the Leeds game, saying: “Yeah, he (Mavropanos) is injured, he came off. Now he's doing a scan to see the real injury that he has. I cannot answer exactly how long he's going to be out. For sure, this game is not an option for us, unfortunately.”
Mavropanos seemed to be an important part of Santo’s plans, but it now looks as though he will be out until some time in December, at which point the Hammers could be deep in a relegation battle if they don’t get going soon.
