Chris Sutton shares what his 'issue' with Liverpool is after Brentford defeat

Chris Sutton had a lot to say about Liverpool after they were beaten 3-2 by Brentford in their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Over the last month or so, there have been a couple of times when Liverpool have shown their class, such as in their game against Eintracht Frankfurt, but more often than not, it’s not gone to plan.

Arne Slot’s back four have been extremely leaky, and the fact that Mohamed Salah is failing to score in most games is a massive cause for concern.

These are the two main issues that Sutton has with Liverpool at the moment; however, it’s the Reds’ defensive line being “all over the place” that seems to have got a bee in his bonnet.

Ibrahima Konate has arguably been one of Liverpool’s worst performers this season.

He’s been half the player he was last term, and, with his contract situation still hanging over his head, it doesn’t feel like that’s getting resolved any time soon.

Indeed, Virgil van Dijk is trying his utmost to keep his back four in line, but it still feels near impossible for him to get them back to their best.

Milos Kerkez did manage to get in with the scoring on Saturday, but realistically, it’s his defensive contributions that need to improve.

And now, while speaking on 606, Sutton has shared his thoughts on whether or not Liverpool have what it takes to win the Premier League title this season.

“It’s a situation at Liverpool where, you know, there has been a lot of talk about the money which has been spent,” he said.

“The issue I’ve got with Liverpool is, I know Mo Salah isn’t firing. Brilliant goal that he scored last night, but he’s not really firing as he did last season.

“But defensively, I just think Liverpool are all over the place, and you’re going to concede goals. And I don’t think you can win titles if you’re leaky at the back.”

Liverpool could do with bringing in a new centre-back in the January transfer window

Although most of Liverpool’s transfer talk has been about bringing Antoine Semenyo in, it’s clear that the Reds need a new centre-back more than anything.

Semenyo would be able to cover Salah’s absence when he goes off to AFCON, but upon his return, he’d be fighting for his place against the Egyptian King and Cody Gakpo, which would not likely go in his favour.

However, if the Anfield outfit chose to direct their attention towards shoring up their back line and got to the source of the issue straight away, the Reds’ fortunes could be turned around.

It was clear that they knew that they needed another centre-back in January, as Marc Guehi was inches away from becoming a member of Slot’s first-team squad, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

January could be make or break for Liverpool, and if they don’t do anything about their leaky defence, their title hopes could be over.
