Crystal Palace have been told Liverpool’s biggest weakness as they prepare to face the Reds again on Wednesday.
Crystal Palace have been told why they have plenty of hope of beating Liverpool for the second time this season when they face the Reds at Anfield on Wednesday night. Palace started Liverpool’s rotten run with a late win at Selhurst Park, which was the Merseyside club’s first defeat of the season.
Since then, Liverpool have lost four straight league games and five of their last six across all competitions, slipping down the Premier League table as a result. In a rematch just weeks after playing in the Premier League, Palace and Liverpool face off at Anfield in the Carabao Cup last 16 on Wednesday night, and both teams go into this one on the back of a defeat.
Liverpool lost to Brentford over the weekend, while Palace came up just short against Arsenal. Palace will be hoping their Liverpool blueprint works just as well away from home as they look to land a quarter-final spot, while the Reds will surely just be hoping to turn the momentum after struggling to get anything going over the last few weeks.
For Palace, they key to winning this one could be to maximise their offensive output, with Chris Sutton detailing what Liverpool’s current weakness is when speaking on 606. He said: “It’s a situation at Liverpool where, you know, there has been a lot of talk about the money which has been spent,” he said.
“The issue I’ve got with Liverpool is, I know Mo Salah isn’t firing. Brilliant goal that he scored last night, but he’s not really firing as he did last season. But defensively, I just think Liverpool are all over the place, and you’re going to concede goals. And I don’t think you can win titles if you’re leaky at the back.”
Slot at his most disappointed
Speaking after Liverpool’s defeat to Brentford, Liverpool boss Slot admitted it was the performance that has disappointed him most during his time at the club so far. He said: “Yes, I think it's up there in my time here in terms of losing a game of football because normally when we are 2-1, 3-1 or 1-0 down... by the way, after we went 1-0 down, that was the only 20 or 25 minutes I really liked from our game today. Unfortunately, we had a great moment with Florian that didn't lead to a goal because you need to then have a little bit of luck and those moments can bring you back into the game and can give us the energy. But, after 30 minutes, I think they took the game again with long throw-ins, set-pieces and other moments where they were just really good. Again, please don't focus on what I've just said because they did many things well.
“Then, I think it is a crucial moment when just before they scored the 2-0, there was a moment where Cody dribbled inside the box and they didn't play the ball. I think if you would show both situations - the penalty we conceded and that moment - to every referee in the world, they would tell you maybe both were nothing but if I had to give one of the two then I definitely would give the one to Cody. The bad luck for us was that I don't think the referee was intending to give a penalty for that but he thought he'd give them a free-kick, then the VAR said it was inside so then if you think it's a free-kick then it's a penalty. That bad luck maybe comes if you play a game of football like we did today.”
