Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer has confirmed his decision to retire from professional football at the age of 33.

The goalkeeper had been without a club since the end of last season, after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Peterborough United.

Steer spent 10 years as a Villa player, and fans had the chance to pay tribute to him at Villa Park during the final Premier League game of the 2022/23 season against Brighton. He had been the club’s longest-serving player, having joined Villa from Norwich City in 2013.

During his time at the club, Steer made 36 appearances for Villa, 19 of which came in the 2018/19 campaign when he played a key role in helping the team win promotion to the Premier League. He was instrumental in the club’s record-breaking run of 10 consecutive league wins that season.

Steer’s contribution proved crucial in the play-off semi-final against West Bromwich Albion, where he saved two penalties in the decisive shoot-out victory.

Steer announced his retirement on social media on Monday evening. He said: “It’s time to hang up the gloves. It’s been a blast. Three Wembley final wins, promotion to the Premier League and both Achilles ruptured!

"Thank you to the fans and everyone who’s been part of the journey. I have memories that will live with me forever.”

Before leaving Villa just over two years ago, Steer said: "For me, I just did my job and did what every player did during those games and gave my best.

“It’s great that people still look back on those times and look fondly on them. That’s certainly something that I do all the time."
