Packers’ Matthew Golden makes unexpected move after underwhelming Week 8 performance

Green Bay Packers fans are still waiting for a true breakout performance from rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden.

It looked as though he was on the verge of getting one after three consecutive games of gradually topping his receiving yards total, including his 86-yard output in a 27-18 win over the Cincinnati Bengals at home in Week 6.

However, he has failed to sustain that form, having regressed in the last two Packers games. On Sunday, the former Texas Longhorns star wideout had a forgettable showing in a 35-25 win over Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Golden caught all three of his looks from quarterback Jordan Love, but he converted them to a measly output of four receiving yards for a pathetic average of 1.3 yards per reception.

When fans tried to check out if Golden had something to say via social media about the Steelers game, they just found out that he had his X, formerly Twitter, accounts put offline.

Perhaps Golden just wants some quiet as he goes through a challenging rookie campaign. After all, reading negative comments from people online is the last thing he needs to get his confidence back up.

Even though Green Bay wasn’t able to get meaningful production from Golden, the Packers had an incredible night offensively. Love went 29-of-37 for 360 passing yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Tucker Kraft took care of most of the business downfield for the Packers, as he came away with a career-high 143 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven catches and nine targets. Wide receiver Christian Watson, who made his first NFL game appearance in the 2025 season, had 85 receiving yards on four catches and four targets.

With Watson back from injury andKraft proving to Green Bay that he could be the team’s primary optiondownfield, Golden’s outlook seems discouraging at the moment.

That said, he can still find his groove again, as Green Bay faces the Carolina Panthers in Week 9 at home.

On the season, Golden has 253 receiving yards on 21 catches through seven games.
