Manchester United man responds to Pep Guardiola praise – Tries to play it all down

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has admitted he is honoured by comments by Pep Guardiola about his ability to play out from the back.

[Sporx cover comments](https://x.com/sporx/status/1983081405258035205) from the goalkeeper today. He’s currently on loan at Trabzonspor, where he appears to be getting back on track.

He joined the Turkish side in the summer when it was made clear he no longer had a future at Manchester United. He’d already been replaced by Altay Bayindir and the arrival of Senne Lammens pushed him further down the pecking order.

The goalkeeper had endured a miserable two years at Old Trafford after signing from Inter Milan in 2023. He’d impressed with the Italian side but failed to repeat that with Manchester United.

Instead, he became something of a lightning rod for mistakes and criticism under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim. Even his one apparent strength, his ability to play out from the back, was often sorely absent.

That was a skill which had earned him praise in the past. Indeed, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had singled him out for praise on more than one occasion.

Onana is happy to hear such praise, despite his Manchester United links. But he insists any qualities he’s shown are thanks to his teammates.

“Most of the time, the important thing for me is to try to do the best for the team,” he said.

“If I have to create a play, I analyse it first. Are the opponents pressing, are they pressing with their wingers, are they pressing with their strikers, or are their centre-backs coming forward?

“These are the things I need to see when I have the ball. I watch how the opponents are moving and then I look at the options and make my decision. Of course, it’s always great to hear a comment like that from Pep Guardiola. He’s one of the best managers in the history of football.

“But as I always say, most of the time, it’s my teammates who give me the options when I’m building up the game. If they help me, the work looks much better.”
