African players were at the centre of this past weekend’s Premier League action, with seven adding to their goalscoring tallies.
Moroccan youngster and former Belgian youth international Chemsdine Talbi netted the winner against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, putting Sunderland up 2-1 in the third minute of stoppage time. The 20-year-old joined the Black Cats at the start of the season and has already notched two caps for the Moroccan senior international team, and now has a Premier League goal to his name.
Pape Matar Sarr put the icing on the cake for Tottenham Hotspur against Everton on Sunday, as Spurs handed the Toffees their first loss at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Senegalese international scored Spurs’ third of the game in the 89th minute for his fourth goal contribution in eight league games.
Bryan Mbeumo found the back of the net for the second successive game for Manchester United, scoring twice in his side’s 4-2 win over Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Cameroonian international netted his first of the game in the 61st minute before adding another deep into stoppage time.
Two African players were on the scoresheet in Liverpool’s shock 3-2 loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. Burkina Faso international Dango Ouattara opened the scoring in the fifth minute, while Liverpool and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah pulled one back for the visitors in the 89th minute.
Similarly, both Zimbabwe’s Marshall Munetsi and South Africa’s Lyle Foster found the back of the net in Burnley’s 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux on Sunday. Munetsi leveled the score at 2-2 on the stroke of half-time. However, his work was undone by Foster who netted deep into second half stoppage time to hand the Clarets the win.
