Man Utd have clear Champions League advantage as Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle suffer…

For the first time as Manchester United boss, Ruben Amorim has guided the Red Devils to three consecutive victories.

United beat Sunderland 2-0 before the October international break in a result that could very well define the Portuguese manager's tenure as, after the break, United have put another two wins together - over fierce rivals Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Pressure was mounting on Amorim prior to that victory over the Black Cats, following a poor start to the campaign. Particularly after a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last year.

But three straight wins have turned the tide and turned fan feeling in Amorim's favour. United are now sixth in the table, just one point off the top four and Champions League qualification.

They have a favourable-looking run of fixtures coming up between now and the festive period, with Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Everton, Crystal Palace, West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth and Aston Villa all to play before Christmas.

The battle for the Champions League places this season looks wide open, with surprise packages Bournemouth and Sunderland occupying two of the top four spots after nine games of the campaign, with north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham in the other two.

But United may just have an advantage over the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Villa, Newcastle and Liverpool when it comes to finishing in the top four and that is evident this week.

No midweek games

The Carabao Cup trophy

While four of those five teams - and Arsenal and Spurs - have midweek action to think about, United do not.

It is the fourth round of the Carabao Cup this week, with Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City all vying for a spot in the quarter-finals. A resurgent Villa also have midweek off, but United have an advantage over Unai Emery's team as well.

There is midweek action for all of those clubs next week as UEFA club competition resumes. Villa will be in Europa League action, with Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs and Arsenal all in Champions League action.

United's 15th-placed finish last season and defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final in May, plus the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, means Amorim's side do not have any midweek commitments this season, bar the two Premier League midweeks later on in the campaign.

That does mean that a number of squad players may be kicking their heels, without any games to keep them occupied, but also allows Amorim the chance to work with his players on the training pitch for a full week between matches, to prepare properly for every fixture in the league calendar.

And that could turn out to be a major advantage come the end of the season.
