Aston Villa promotion hero Jed Steer calls time on playing career

The 33-year-old represented Villa for a decade until 2023 but made just 36 appearances for the club.

His starring moment came in the 2019 play-off success. Steer played 19 times for Villa that term having deputised for the injured Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic and was the hero of the penalty shootout semi-final success against Albion at The Hawthorns that sent his side to Wembley and led to promotion.

Steer wrote on social media: "It’s time to hang up the gloves. It’s been a blast.

"Three Wembley final wins, promotion to the Premier League and both Achilles ruptured!

"Thank you to the fans and everyone who’s been part of the journey! I have memories that will live with me forever. Thank you."

The goalkeeper was signed by Paul Lambert in the summer of 2013 among a raft of additions including Antonio Luna, Jores Okore, Leandro Bacuna, Aleksandar Tonev and striker Nicklas Helenius.

Steer is remembered for his role in the 2019 promotion under Dean Smith having been recalled from League One Charlton to deputise in mid-February - initially midway through a Villa Park defeat to Albion - before making the position his own.

Villa went on to prevail at The Hawthorns to deny their rivals and book a Wembley date with Derby, where Smith's men were 2-1 winners and promoted.

Steer's Villa were 4-3 shootout winners against the Baggies after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline as the visiting keeper kept out the hosts' first two spot-kicks from defenders Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi.

He is fondly remembered among Villans for staring down Holgate before keeping out the defender's effort.

Steer, from Norwich and previously of the Canaries academy, was between the sticks as Smith's men beat Derby 2-1 at Wembley, helping Villa reclaim the top-flight status they still hold today.

The goalkeeper stayed at Villa in reserve for another four seasons and made two Premier League appearances and nine in all competitions.

He spent 18 months in League One with Peterborough following his release in the summer of 2023 and made exactly 50 appearances for the Posh. That was initially after six months out of the game until January 2024.

Steer, a former England under-19 international, has carried out media work with Villa TV since leaving Villa Park and is studying for his coaching badges.

His playing spanned more than 200 senior appearances, despite having served many of those seasons in a back-up role.
