Report: The progress of Chelsea defender Levi Colwill as injury update emerges

There has been an update regarding Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, who’s currently sidelined with a long-term injury.

It was crushing news for Chelsea during the summer when Levi Colwill, 22, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the first day of pre-season.

Of course, the English centre-back hasn’t played yet during the 2025-26 campaign because ACL injuries usually sideline players for between six and nine months. It is very much a case-by-case basis, though.

Joe Cole claims Chelsea have massively struggled without Colwill, who was an ever-present in last season’s team. Instead, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca has frequently rotated his starting partnership at centre-half, leading to them conceding 13 goals in 16 games across all competitions this campaign.

Levi Colwill injury update

According to The Sun, Chelsea star Colwill is on track with his recovery from the crushing ACL injury.

Apparently, the left-footed defender is aiming to play again this season. Even though he’s still a long way off a return to training, he’s working on moving his knee joint again and is bang on schedule with his return.

We would have had Colwill as a banker for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the 2026 World Cup, which now feels pretty unlikely. Even so, it would be fantastic for him to make a comeback before the end of this current season.

Without a doubt, his timing came at the worst time because he had established himself as Chelsea’s best centre-back, impressing in the final few months of last season. On top of winning the Club World Cup, he also scored the winning goal on the final day of the Premier League to clinch fourth spot.

It is encouraging to hear Wesley Fofana explain Colwill is still smiling around Cobham as he continues his rehabilitation on the serious injury.

Levi Colwill is one of the gems from the Chelsea academy

If you look at the Chelsea academy, it’s produced some exceptional talents in recent years, including Colwill. Club captain Reece James, along with Josh Acheampong, are some of many more to jump from Cobham to the first-team squad.

Here is a look at Colwill’s senior record to date at Chelsea:

75 3 2

When everyone is fit and firing, Chelsea’s back four moving forward could realistically include academy graduates Colwill, James and Acheampong. If that happens, it would be some motivation for the youngsters progressing through the club’s system.

Naturally, Colwill will require time and patience when he’s back playing again. We hope he can get back on track and fulfil his incredible potential to be one of the top central defenders around.
