The January transfer window is now just two months away and so it can be expected that rumours will ramp up from here.
And Leicester City have featured in a few transfer stories over the past week, with players linked in and out. Here, we take a look at the likelihood moves will come to fruition.
Fletcher twins on radar
City were one of a host of clubs, including Ipswich, Charlton and Derby, who had a scout at Manchester United Under-21s’ 5-2 EFL Trophy defeat to Barnsley last week, according to the Sun’s Alan Nixon.
The focus of the scouts’ attention is suggested to have been midfielders Jack and Tyler Fletcher, the twin sons of former United favourite Darren.
While Tyler Fletcher plays deeper in midfield, Jack is more of an attack-minded player, and indeed got on the scoresheet in the game before being sent off.
With the options they currently have, it does not feel like the midfield is an area of concern for City going into the January transfer window.
Provided players stay fit, they have plenty of choices for the deeper and attacking midfield roles in Marti Cifuentes’ side, with Harry Winks, Boubakary Soumare, Oliver Skipp, Jordan James, Aaron Ramsey, Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Louis Page all available to choose from.
Where the situation might change is that Soumare and Winks will both be in the final six months of their contracts come January, and so, if City do not plan to renew their deals, it would be the final time to make some cash on the pair.
If both were to depart, City would leave themselves short. In that scenario, Tyler Fletcher as a sitting midfield option might make sense as a loan arrival. But a few dominoes would need to fall first.
Choudhury eyed by Sheffield United
The Sheffield Star report that, as they did last January, Sheffield United may look to bring in Hamza Choudhury on loan in the winter window.
Choudhury made a good impression last season, becoming the Blades’ first-choice right-back as they made it to the play-off final.
With Chris Wilder’s side short of options at right-back and in midfield, it’s reported that they could look at taking Choudhury again. What’s up for debate is whether City would let him go.
On the pitch, Choudhury is City’s back-up right-back, but is called upon fairly regularly as a substitute, with Cifuentes keen not to risk Ricardo Pereira. The Portuguese has also not played a single minute of the club’s midweek games this term, with Choudhury deputising on those occasions.
It means Choudhury has featured in nine of City’s 13 games, while he’s been in the matchday squad for every game.
It seems then that City may be reluctant to part with Choudhury. There’s also the added factor of his role as vice-captain, albeit Conor Coady and James Justin also wore the armband under Cifuentes prior to being sold.
City do have Bade Aluko coming up through the ranks and he can play in both full-back positions. If he can step up to the first team in the next couple of months, that would limit the impact of Choudhury leaving.
But in any case, it feels unlikely that City would sanction a move that strengthens a divisional rival, especially when it’s a loan.
Murphy questioned Pompey future
During the final days of the summer window, City were linked with Portsmouth winger Josh Murphy. There were reports of bids at the time, but those have since been quashed by Pompey’s sporting director Rich Hughes.
City’s interest was dropped at least by deadline day, when the focus was on bringing in Jordan James, Aaron Ramsey and Julian Carranza.
More recently, Cifuentes said that City could have gone into the market for a winger following Kasey McAteer’s sale to Ipswich, but ultimately he decided that Silko Thomas was good enough to step up and that deals should be prioritised in other departments.
Now, for the first time, Murphy himself has spoken. And he says bids were received, albeit they could have come from West Brom, who were also keen.
The 30-year-old did question if he would stay with Portsmouth at the time, but is now certain to, signing a new contract at the start of this month.
Murphy told Portsmouth News: “A couple of bids had come in, I was asking myself am I going to be a Pompey player? Am I not? That’s all I can really say.
“That’s what happens sometimes in football, you just never know what’s going to happen. That was nearly two months ago, it feels like a distant memory now.
“It wasn’t unsettling. I have always been happy here. It’s nice to have interest from other clubs, obviously you must be doing something right. Everything is all sorted now, I’m a Pompey player and I just want to create something special.”
Murphy's new contract at Fratton Park should mean a January move is out of the question.
