Newcastle United teenager set to learn new position as debut for loan club now in sight after…

Newcastle United will hope to see Trevan Sanusi kick on at Lorient as the teenager nears a return from injury.

Eddie Howe is looking to find consistency with his Newcastle United squad after an up-and-down start to the season.

Howe is under little pressure, but the same cannot be said of Newcastle’s loan and pathways manager, Shola Ameobi.

Newcastle’s loan players are struggling this season, and questions have been asked of Ameobi’s decision-making behind these deals.

Antonio Cordero has failed to shine for Westerlo in very limited opportunities, and other loanees aren’t having much more luck.

Trevan Sanusi nearing return from injury at Lorient

Howe has backed Ameobi but fans need to see some progress from Newcastle’s young talents.

Trevan Sanusi is one such player, as he arrived from Birmingham City as something of a wonderkid in 2023.

The 18-year-old winger has been a regular for England at youth level, and there is major excitement over his future.

Sanusi has joined Ligue 1 side Lorient on loan for the season, but he has yet to feature for the club due to injury.

An ankle problem means Sanusi has actually been back in the North East for treatment ahead of returning to Lorient.

Lorient boss Olivier Pantaloni has now told Ouest-France that Sanusi is expected to be back in France early in November.

Pantaloni has received the green light from Newcastle for Sanusi to return, and he is expected to be in action before 2025 closes out.

“We received news through his club,” said Pantaloni.

“Everything is fine. He should take a flight to join us on November 2 and be with us the following day. We’ll have to see what condition he’s in. But we hope to be able to get him back into the squad straight away. He’ll be able to play with us before the end of the year,” he added.

How Lorient intend to use Newcastle United’s Trevan Sanusi

Sanusi is a winger by trade, but he has joined a Lorient side that play without wingers under Pantaloni, which may raise some eyebrows.

Pantaloni has a clear plan in mind, though, as he wants Sanusi to play off the striker in a 3-4-2-1 system.

Sanusi is viewed as direct competition for attackers Karim Dermane, Pablo Pagis and Aiyegun Tosin when he returns to Lorient.

“He’ll play in a similar role to Dermane, Pablo, and Tosin, so he’ll be playing under the attacker,” said Pantaloni.

This gives Sanusi the chance to learn a new role and hopefully add some strings to his bow before resuming his Newcastle career in 2026.
