The New York Giants are sitting at 2-6 after eight games and with their playoff chances on life support, the team should consider selling off some parts at the deadline.
One name to watch, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, is edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Schultz notes that some around the league wonder if Thibodeaux might be available at the deadline with the Giants going nowhere this year.
"Sources: Another name to watch on the trade front is Giants EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux," Schultz writes. "He’s under contract for another year after this season, but some around the league have wondered whether he’s part of New York’s long-term plans and if he could become available with the Giants sitting at 2-6."
There has been nothing to suggest that the Giants are willing to part ways with the 24-year-old, and chances are they won't given the fact that general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll need all hands on deck to finish the 2025 season strong and save their jobs.
That said, if Thibodeaux does become available, the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers are two teams that could get involved.
The Niners are tied for the second-fewest sacks in the NFL and that doesn't figure to get any better with Nick Bosa out for the season and Bryce Huff dealing with what could be a multi-week hamstring issue.
In Detroit, the Lions could use more firepower opposite Aidan Hutchinson. The team is currently relying on career backup Al-Quadin Muhammad and Marcus Davenport remains on injured reserve.
Thibs has proven to be an impact edge rusher during his young career. He posted a career-best 11.5 sacks in 2023 and notched another 5.5 in 12 games in 2024. This season, Thibodeaux has 2.5 sacks and 25 pressures.
Not only is Thibodeaux an effective pass-rusher, he is also an elite run defender, as evidenced by his Pro Football Focus grade of 83.1, which ranks third in the NFL among edge rushers.
What makes Thibodeaux more attractive is that he's still on a rookie contract, and will be through next season, so he could be a multi-year solution for San Fran or Detroit, especially if he can earn an extension.
Given his past production, age and contract situation, it's conceivable Thibodeaux could fetch a third-round pick, although New York will likely want more if it isn't completely sold on dealing him.
Either way, the 49ers and Lions should put in a call to at least gauge what it'll take to bring in an upgrade like Thibodeaux.
