Newcastle United could be hit with an astronomical bill if they chose to go back in for old boy Elliot Anderson.
With Eddie Howe admitting he would be interested in re-signing the midfielder earlier this season, the battle to win his signature could be a fierce one. Newcastle offloaded Anderson to Nottingham Forest in June 2024 after being forced into the sale to avoid a six-point deduction from the Premier League.
With Newcastle luring Ross Wilson from Forest as sporting director, there are high hopes that the man who helped prise Anderson from Tyneside holds the keys to getting him home. But a sky high asking price would appear to be on the cards.
A £35m fee proved to be a club record at that time, but he has since risen to international level with England and Forest - who don't want to sell him - have slapped a fee ranging between £100m -£120m for his services moving forward - according to fresh reports.
That would shatter Newcastle's transfer record for a player they once had firmly within their grasp. Anderson had been touted by national journalists as a £75m target for Chelsea and Man City but with Man United also thought to be keen, Forest sources suggest he could only be allowed to leave for that huge fee of up to £120m.
Anderson is contracted until 2029, and Newcastle doesn't have a buy-back clause or sell-on clause. Howe had said to Chronicle Live last month: "In terms of buy-back clauses, we were not in a good bargaining position at all. So our strength to negotiate those sort of things was non-existent."

William Osula's future hinges on Yoane Wissa fitness
Osula's name cropped up on numerous occasions at today's Press conference as Eddie Howe described that the forward came "close" to leaving for Eintracht Frankfurt.
The original deal would have seen Newcastle get £4.3m for a loan deal, but after an obligation for a sale worth £30m was inserted, Toon owners PIF opted out of the sale.
But Frankfurt are still thought to be keen on a move for the Denmark Under-21, while Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping tabs on the star. However, Osula's future will all boil down to game-time with a verbal agreement from both the player's representatives and the Newcastle coaching staff understood to be in place should he end up warming the bench.
For now, Osula is playing second fiddle to Nick Woltemade, but his status could soon change again if Wissa gets fit and starts banging the goals in. January will be an interesting time for the ex-Sheffield United striker.
Could Premier League sides get Porto star for knockdown rate?
Chronicle Live reported on exciting FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa being put to the Magpies in recent times as a potential target. In form in Liga Portugal, Samu is attracting attention from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
He's a striker on Newcastle's rader too but it remains to be seen whether his £87million release clause gets triggered by any of the interested parties. Fichajes in Spain are today reporting that Samu could yet leave for a cheaper fee.
They say: "The Portuguese club has a £87 million release clause, which imposes a significant barrier. Even so, Porto could soften its position if it receives a solid offer that reflects its ambitions without reaching that threshold.
"Newcastle United also maintains their active interest. Although their January resources could be more limited due to internal regulations, the Magpies aren't ruling out entering the bidding for Samu Aghehowa if the right opportunity arises. The competition between these clubs adds pressure to Porto's decision in the coming months."
