‘Supermac’ Back In Scoring Routine

Kevin McDonald.

Saturday, October 4: Kevin McDonald, who turns 37 next week, hit the only goal of the game as Exeter won at Lincoln to end a run of five straight defeats. It was the Scot’s first appearance on the score-sheet for three seasons and came more than nine years after the end of his impressive 126-match spell at Wolves.

Sunday, October 5: Thoroughly enjoyed having Tim Steele at my side for the Premier League home draw against Brighton this afternoon. The late 1980s and early 1990s Wolves winger has been no more than a very occasional visitor to Molineux over the subsequent decades and struggled to remember the stadium as the one he had played in a few dozen times.

Tuesday, October 7: Good luck to Kevin Thelwell as he tries to help rid Ibrox of the toxic atmosphere it has had since Rangers’ appointment of Russell Martin as manager in the summer began to go wrong. The ex-Southampton boss was sacked after the weekend draw at Falkirk and the long-time former Wolves director of football is one of those at the sharp end of the search for a replacement and a way out of a dismal start to 2025-26.

Saturday, October 18: Loved having a lunchtime coffee with Rob Kelly before Barrow’s League Two fixture at Walsall this afternoon. The club from the distant north-west used The Village hotel by junction ten of the M6 for their pre-match meal and that allowed more than half an hour of quality catch-up time with the man who returned to the Holker Street backroom team a month or so ago. The coach’s always-affable nature was lifted even further by a shock 2-1 win against the leaders – one achieved with ten men for nearly half of the game and followed by some buoyant messaging between us while the squad headed home afterwards.

Monday, October 20: Interesting to see and hear Gary O’Neil working as a Sky Sports studio pundit during coverage of tonight’s West Ham v Brentford game. His comments, especially on the re-emergence of the long throw as a tactic in the Premier League, provided excellent insight and he also revealed that he had turned offers down since being sacked at Molineux last December – as well as being overlooked for other possible jobs.

Thursday, October 23: No luck yet for Mike Stowell – on the pitch at least – after being appointed as Plymouth’s goalkeeper coach just over a week ago. Following a home loss against Wimbledon in his first game, there was a painful 2-0 Devon derby defeat at Exeter tonight in a vibrant clash shown live on Sky Sports.

Sunday, October 26: Great to hear that Steve Kindon was present at Molineux this afternoon for the meeting of two of his former clubs. Life hasn’t been easy with his health struggles but he still managed to give a powerful performance on the mic in the worldwide lounge before kick-off. Among the other former Wolves players in attendance for the visit of Burnley were Mo Camara in the Billy Wright Stand corporate areas and Don Goodman, Andy Thompson, David Kelly and Lee Naylor in the broadcasting seats.
