Giants star pass rusher could be surprise move before 2025 NFL trade deadline

The New York Giants have stumbled to a 2-6 start this season, a campaign marked by inconsistency during a rebuild. A rocky offense and lapses on defense have left the team searching for answers, and the front office has been weighing options as Nov. 4 trade deadline approaches. Young quarterback Jaxson Dart has taken over under center, showing flashes of potential while the team evaluates its long-term roster.

Amid that backdrop, one name has surfaced in trade chatter: edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Thibodeaux is a “name to watch” as teams consider upgrades on the pass rush.

“Some around the league have wondered whether he’s part of New York’s long-term plans and if he could become available with the Giants sitting at 2-6,” Schultz reported.

Thibodeaux’s production this season has been modest 21 tackles and 2.5 sacks through eight games, after a 2024 campaign limited by injury. The Giants exercised his fifth-year option, so he’s under contract for 2025 and set to earn about $14.7 million next season. That salary, plus New York’s investment in rookie edge Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick, creates a realistic scenario where the team might explore trading Thibodeaux to gain assets.

Interest has been linked to multiple teams; the Cincinnati Bengals have been singled out as a natural fit, with analysts suggesting a second-round pick or more could be required to land the former fifth overall pick. Still, movement in the pass-rush market has been slow. “There are so many available options,” Schultz added.

For a Giants team balancing immediate competitiveness and longer-term rebuilding, moving Thibodeaux could bring draft capital and flexibility. But any trade would hinge on market demand, contract considerations and whether a team believes it can unlock the 24-year-old’s full potential.
