Saints hand keys to rookie Tyler Shough after brutal 1-7 start

The New Orleans Saints are making a quarterback change that carries some weight. Tyler Shough will take over as the starting quarterback, replacing Spencer Rattler after the team’s rough start to the season left them searching for answers.

Shough’s arrival in New Orleans already came with a bit of history attached to it. He became the Saints’ highest-drafted quarterback since Archie Manning went No. 2 overall back in 1971.

The former Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville signal-caller was selected in the second round after a standout college season that put him among the nation’s elite passers. Now the moment has arrived for him to show what that investment was worth.

Head coach Kellen Moore had hinted that a decision was coming soon, and on Tuesday it became official. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the Saints are moving forward with their rookie under center while Rattler heads to the bench.

“Saints informed rookie QB Tyler Shough that he will be their starter with Spencer Rattler remaining on the bench, per source,” Schefter wrote on X.

The Saints now have nine games remaining to evaluate whether Shough can cement himself as the long-term answer at the position. Or if another offseason reset awaits once the year wraps up.

Time isn’t exactly on the Saints’ side right now. Sitting at 1-7, New Orleans enters the final stretch before next week’s trade deadline with the phones buzzing. According to Schefter, the Saints have fielded numerous calls and could move either Rashid Shaheed or Brandin Cooks before the window closes.

If a deal happens, the challenge of scraping together wins could get even steeper, regardless of who’s taking snaps under center.

As it stands, the New Orleans Saints currently hold the top spot in the 2026 NFL Draft order. Whether Shough can change that trajectory or simply audition for next season remains to be seen. Either way, the Saints are betting their final nine games on finding out.
