Bears Sign Former Packers Defender

The Chicago Bears took a step back in their Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens and Tyler Huntley that ended a four-game winning streak.

Putting up only 16 points against a beaten and battered defense was disappointing, but giving up 30 to an offense that was missing Lamar Jackson was a bigger concern.

That is why Chicago has made a move to bring in a potential reinforcement.

“The Bears are signing former Miami Hurricanes DE Jonathan Garvin to the practice squad, per LAA,” Tom Pelissero wrote on X.

Garvin was a seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFL Draft.

He played in 38 games for the Packers and recorded 32 combined tackles, and after being waived during the 2023 offseason, he caught on with the Birmingham Stallions of the XFL.

He most recently spent time on the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad and was one of their final cuts ahead of the regular season.

Besides Montez Sweat, the Bears haven’t gotten much production at edge rusher, and with Dominique Robinson now out with a high-ankle sprain, the depth is even less.

Garvin is just 26 years old and has regular-season experience, so he could crack the Bears’ roster soon.

Chicago next plays at the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9 before hosting the New York Giants in Week 10, so bolstering the pass rush should be a priority.
